The Islamikon Verlag is a specialized academic publisher dedicated to Islamic and Middle Eastern studies. Its history dates back to 1949, when the Military Government granted Hans Vorndran a license for the publication of books and periodicals under the firm Verlag für Orientkunde. Since then, the Verlag has built a longstanding tradition of publishing high-quality scholarly works on the history, culture, and literature of the Near and Middle East.
In 2001, Dr. Oliver Vorndran inherited the Verlag from his grandfather, Dr. Hans Vorndran, continuing the family’s dedication to academic publishing and the promotion of Oriental and Islamic studies. Since 2023, Prof. Dr. Jens Scheiner has taken over as the new owner and series editor, leading the Verlag into its next chapter of scholarly excellence.
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Marzolph, former editor of the series “Beiträge zur Kulturgeschichte des islamischen Orients” (Contributions to the Cultural History of the Islamic Orient), served as a guiding force in the editorial direction of the Verlag. A retired professor of Islamic Studies at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen, Germany, Prof. Marzolph was also a senior member of the editorial committee of the Enzyklopädie des Märchens. He specializes in the narrative culture of the Islamic Near and Middle East, with particular emphasis on Arab and Persian folk narratives, popular literature, and related fields.
